It's been a very different week than my previous weeks, well i am in the absolute lap of luxury, with room service and cable tv. Have been watching a lot of TV. Nothing good, loads of crappy movies but hey a movie is a movie ...
Had my
Peking duck, it was yummy.
And also visited the Forbidden City, it's gynormous, it goes on for days and days, I'm telling you! It was also insanely crowded, it is golden week, the week when all of China is on holidays, as a result Beijing is crammed full of people from all over China. This also the reason why so much attention is being paid to me. I thought it was strange that Beijingers would be startled by a tourist, but now I realise that many of the people here are from the countryside and it's very possible that many of them have never seen a westerner before.
I walked and was josselled around the forbidden city for hours, I tried to imagine what it would have been like to have lived there, it was fancy and everything but not really my cup of tea, being isolated in there with no flushing toilets, having to share my Emperor with lots of other concubunines, and not being able to leave, I think after a while all the flower arranging and caligraphy in the world wouldn't stop me from wanting to top myself.
But the highlight of the week must have been my quest to find a pair of sandals. Now 'I don't think i am being mean if i say that us europeans are a little bigger than the locals here. And my feet are a little bigger that most european ladies feet, 40. Well anyway, under this hotel is the largest shopping mall i have ever seen, and i thought well if i can't get sandals here i won't get them anywhere... well it looks like my little toes will have to stay covered for another while. Some of the ladies in the shops, went, Nihoa, and then ho ho ho when they say the size of my feet, I am begining to see why Side Show Bob is unhinged.
My tour starts tomorrow for 21 days around china, i am a little uncertain about how i am going to keep blogging, this is costing $18 an hour here and apparently most of the internet cafes were closed down due in order to ensure public health and stop the spread of SARS. But I will do my best to keep you entertained on my journey.
